DRIFT Moments of Connection

The Elbphilharmonie is celebrating its fifth birthday this year and to mark the occasion, the international artist duo DRIFT is staging three extensive projects in the MK&G.

DRIFT is transforming 350 square metres of the MK&G with three kinetic sculptures, inviting visitors into a sensory experience space where dandelion seeds glow, flowers are made of silk blossoms that unfold and retract elegantly and where a spatial installation mimics the flight of an animal.

The first visible installation is located in the stairwell leading from the ground floor to the first floor and is called "Skylight" (2006). There, the silk flowers move in a poetic choreography and thus accompany the visitors up and down the stairs, but also to stand completely beneath them and watch the flowers unfold. This dance is reminiscent of a natural mechanism called nyctinasty, where flowers retract their blossoms due to changes in light and resembles a "sleeping movement".

By using numerous layers of silk, the subtle choreography resembles that of a dancer and thus seduces the visitor.

The "Skylight" installation thus leads the visitor to the 1st floor where the kinetic installation "In 20 Steps" floats in a long room.

"In 20 Steps" (2015) is a spatial installation consisting of twenty delicate glass wings that depict the various steps of flying in an abstract way. The sequence and symmetrical movements of these line-like glass wings create a play of light that accompanies the entire floating installation and gives it an individual light reflection with every movement.

The glass elements emphasise the fragility not only of the material but also of movement and nature itself.

The installation "Fragile Future III" consists of three-dimensional, electrical circuits made of bronze, which are connected to glowing dandelions. These circuits are inserted in a strict cubist form, creating a skeletal structure that gains lightness and poetry through the glowing dandelions. The artist duo distinguishes itself by using real dandelion seeds, each of which has been individually glued to LED lights, thus making a statement by the artists against mass production.

This sculpture is not only a statement against mass production, but also a critical and utopian vision of the future of our planet, where two opposing evolutions fight for their own survival: 1. the purely natural evolution: how nature evolves and therefore becomes bigger, and 2. the technical evolution: how technology moves further and further to the forefront and can so be found everywhere.

The DRIFT Studio, founded by Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn (1980) and Ralph Nauta (1978), is prominent in its use of technology to visualise phenomena and hidden features of nature in order to learn from it and restore the relationship with nature.
