THE DUTCH FORT

The DUTCH FORT

Eine Reise in die Vergangenheit

The Dutch Fort Dabei denkt man natürlich zuerst an die Niederlande. Aber weit gefehlt, es handelt sich um

Süd-Ost-Asien, genauer gesagt Galle, Sri Lanka.

europäische Festung in Südasien.

The Charleston, neu im Januar 2024 eröffnet bietet dies Haus

Of course, the first place that springs to mind is the Netherlands. But far from it, we are talking about South-East Asia, more precisely Galle, Sri Lanka.

Built in 1588 by the Portuguese, the fortification was taken over and extended by the Dutch in 1649. The Dutch Fort is the largest European fortress in South Asia.

However, its first roots can be traced back to 125-150 CE, where the harbour of Galle is noted in Ptolemy's maps.

A flourishing trade with Greece, Arabs and also the Chinese is noted and Cosmas Indicopleustes already called the harbour of Galle „the port of call of the Levant“.

The ramparts are almost 3 kilometres long and have 14 bastions built of granite and coral.

The fort has a colourful, multi-religious and multi-ethnic population. Above all, artists of all kinds, painters, writers, photographers, designers and poets populate the fort - mostly Sri Lankan Moors (Muslims) but also Dutch, English, Portuguese, Germans and of course Singhalese.

Although the fort successfully withstood the tsunami of 2004, many of the buildings were damaged.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has undertaken to restore and renovate the fort as faithfully as possible to reflect by it’s architecture the dominance of the colonial powers of the Netherlands (and previously Portugal) in combination with Sinhalese style. The Dutch government also provided therefore financial support. As early as 1988, UNESCO declared the fort and the historic centre of Galle a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We would like to suggest three hotels, all of which are good, beautiful and special.

The Ivy Lane is a stylish but simply affordable hotel in the centre of the fort: https://www.ivylane.lk

The Charleston, newly opened in January 2024, offers upscale luxury and modern style in an old-world twist: https://www.wearecreativeleap.com/en/destinations/the-charleston

And then, of course, there is the best hotel in town on Amangalla Square - there is little new to say about the Aman Hotels or their style and noblesse: https://www.aman.com/resorts/amangalla.
